Thursday 9.23.10*

A very well rounded day yesterday, topped off with a nice dinner at Patsy’s near Union Square with my lady.

FYI - It’s not hard to go over budget, even on high calorie days, when pizza is involved.

Cross-fit set the tone for a good, productive day, as per usual. After learning how to properly do overhead squats and front squats, we launched into wall ball and burpees. Yesterday’s WOD was tough, but oh so awesome.

Thursday 9.16.10*

Looooong fucking day yesterday. Up at 5:40a for cross-fit class at 7a, work from 10a-7p, then more work on a different project (feature length documentary that’s about to be finished once and for all) until 11p. By the time I got home, had a late dinner, and wrapped things up for the day it was close to 1am.

I’m pretty sure I didn’t reach my high calorie budget either. I was about 500 calories under my low calorie budget before my dinner of saag paneer and naan around 8p. I added to my calories with half a bison burger on whole wheat bread around 11p. But I don’t think that those two meals put me over budget…but they probably got me pretty close.

But enough with the boring “I’m so tired and this is what I ate today” shit.

I had a great WOD in the morning, filled mainly with power lifting, and a big breakfast to start my high calorie day off on the right foot.

Our warm-up today included 3 sets of the following:

  • 5 dislocates
  • 10 push-ups
  • 15 overhead squats (with a light PVC tube)
  • 20 sit-ups

Yes…that was just the warmup.

After we got the blood flowing, we learned the proper technique for performing the barbell press, push press, and the push jerk. I kept it light, since I wanted to focus on getting my body used to the movements, and didn’t add any weight to my 45lb barbell. We then moved on to a dumbbell variation of thrusters.

After all that, we finally started our WOD

FOUNDATIONS WOD 4

  • Row 300 meters
  • 15 dumbbell thrusters (15lb)
  • Row 200 meters
  • 9 dumbbell thrusters
  • Row 100 meters
  • 6 dumbbell thrusters

High calorie day!

While it was extremely hard to fill up on healthy foods today, it didn’t take much pizza and beer to put me over the edge. Two slices and a single bottle to be exact.

DAYS 8.5* - 9.5

Yesterday was a high calorie day according to my zig-zag rotation, and it couldn’t have come on a better day. I was ravenous the entire day. I couldn’t stop eating. So it wasn’t hard to reach my goal of 2,555 calories. Getting those 3 burpees in before going to bed however, was a bit of a challenge. But I’m glad to say I did them.

As for today, I couldn’t wait to go for a run after work since I missed it yesterday and overslept this morning. Unfortunately, I went pretty far over my calorie budget. Now I just have to get those damn burpees out of the way!

DAY 80.4*

The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly Edition.

The Good:

After a shitty weigh-in reality check this morning, I had a great recovery run in the rain. Trotting along in Prospect Park today I felt as though I had been transported to Golden Gate Park in San Francisco. The crisp, humid air, the light mist of rain, overcast skies, chilly temp, and vibrantly green leaves on the trees all screamed San Francisco. Granted, I’ve only spent a handful of times there, but every time the weather has been similar to today in NYC. It made my run that much more enjoyable to think I was in a completely different city, even if it was only a brief vacation in my mind.

The Bad:

Upon my return home, I noticed I had two voice mails from a friend (I NEVER carry my phone with me on runs…but that’s another post). Without going into too much detail, he basically got fired from a job he hadn’t even started yet, for a completely bullshit reason. Sometimes the freelance world is a cruel bitch. He needed some support (aka, a drinking buddy) and I knew I had to be that person today. I cut my workout short (no weight training) and proceeded to meet him in Manhattan for some unexpected afternoon beers. While I was able to limit myself to 3 pints over the next 3 hours, the mood was somber and those are 3 beers that added unwanted calories into my otherwise pristine eating day. But sometimes, a friend in need is more important than a single day of blemish free food choices.

The Ugly:

Unfortunately, once I adopted this motto, things began to spiral out of control as the afternoon turned into evening. I had dinner plans with my old roommates from college, and while we are all still very close friends and all live in NYC, we don’t get to see each other that often. Since I was near SoHo, they all met me in the neighborhood and we walked over to Loreley for dinner and drinks.  If you don’t feel like checking out the link, I’ll just tell you it’s a pretty amazing biergarten here in the city, with over a dozen tasty German beers on tap…most of which are served in huge 1 liter steins. I did my best to hold my continued consumption of alcohol to only two more beers (I opted for the more normal sized .5 liter glasses), but dinner eventually did me in. I had planned on getting the cheese and fruit plate for a low cal/healthy option. But with the afternoon beers in my belly, and good laughs that completely contrasted my earlier melancholy hangout, I was furiously hungry. I was certain that the smell of those sausages wafting out of the kitchen must be what heaven smells like. Having been to Loreley many times before, I knew that they tasted just as good as they smelled. And at that point, I was a goner.

But all is not lost. I know it’s unconventional to add another high calorie day on top of the previous week that was chocked full of them, but it is what is is. Tomorrow is a another day filled with new choices. Plus, now that my high calorie day is out of the way, I can focus on having 3 low calorie days in a row. Something that has been sorely missing lately.
