DAY 51.3*
Seems like Jed and I were on the same page today…we did almost the exact same run, but in different cities! I was only supposed to do 3.5 miles today, but I ran into a friend (pun intended) who was also out running and we decided to finish our runs together. So I ended up doing 5.1 miles, but it was at a nice, easy pace and with good conversation. What a great run in the melting snow from...

DAY 50.3
I had a really good 2 mile tempo run today with an avg pace of 7:51/mile. Just to put that in perspective: My 3.5 mile moderate run yesterday was around a 8:38/mile While my 7 mile long run a few days ago was clocked at 8:58/mile Tomorrow is a high calorie day…just in time for NYE ;-) __________ Date: 12.30.09 Cardio Exercise (0:16) Run: 2.05 miles (Avg HR:...

WEEK 7.3 - PROGRESS (End of Year Edition)
What a difference 7 days can make…let alone 9 months. Let me explain. I totally fell off the wagon this last week due to three days in a row (Birthday, Xmas Eve, Xmas) that always thwart any weight loss effort I may be attempting at that moment in my life. This year was obviously not any different. Usually after these 3 days pass, I just put any weight loss efforts off until the next year....

DAY 49.3
Damn it was cold outside today…and windy as hell! But I still managed to go out there, brave the elements, and get my run in. Then I came home, lifted some weights, and ate very healthy throughout the day. Lots of lean protein, water, and organic veggies, including: KALE CHIPS! Holy hell, why have I waited so long to make these? Absolutely delicious. I kinda over cooked them (and over...

DAY 48.3
I’m working extra hard this week to make up for ditching work last week. Since I work from home and don’t have a deadline until Jan 4, I have a little bit of leeway with my schedule. Unfortunately, that flexibility doesn’t carry over to weight loss. I didn’t get any XT or weights done today as scheduled and used the excuse that I needed a rest day after my long run. While...

A friend texted me today
bendoeslife: “Hey, I have a friend that is trying to lose weight. He is about the same weight as you were when you started. Any advice?” The advice thing is always tricky. Since losing weight is such a personal thing—such a tough personal thing—it’s hard to give blanket advice to someone. But, if I had to do it, here’s what I would say. 1. Tell people. The more people that know, the more...

What No One Will Tell You About The New Year
bridgettelizabeth: New Year’s Day is around the corner, and everyone is talking about goals, plans and resolutions.  Everyone is all cheery and optimistic and chatty about how great the new year is going to be, and while that’s all well and good, it’s all very dangerous. Dangerous to your true goals, your true ambitions … because the new year doesn’t mean anything at all. You’re still carrying...

DAY 47.3
What a great day to acclimate my body back to a healthy lifestyle! I spent the majority of the day shopping for food, cooking for the week, and running. I needed to make up my long run today since it was pouring yesterday and I wasn’t about to run 6 miles in the rain. So instead I ran 7 miles today at a 9 min/mile avg pace! I weighed myself this morning and found out that I put on another...

DAY 46.3
After two semi-depressing days in a row, I decided it was time to shake off the melancholy attitude and begin to get back on track. Since I skipped my easy run on DAY 44.3, I thought I’d get it out of the way today because it was pouring outside and the forecast called for non-stop rain until tomorrow. According to my training schedule, I am supposed to do a long run (6 miles) today, but...

DAYS 44.3 - 45.3 (Xmas Eve and Xmas)
There was no exercise on DAY 44.3 (Christmas Eve) because, well…I just didn’t feel like it. I was actually in a really foul mood that day. Why? I missed my family. They called after dinner and I was on the receiving end of a really long chain of “pass the phone around to everyone in the house” which was comprised of 11 people and took about 1.5 hours. It lifted my spirits...

DAY 43.3 - BIRTHDAY!!
I did it…I made it to twenty-nine years of age. And on my birthday I made myself do a tempo run and a lower body split…Happy Birthday to me?!? Even though I planned on taking a break from “dieting”, that doesn’t mean I wanted to undo so much of the work I have accomplished in just a few days time. So even though I had a dinner filled with fried goodness (hello fried...

WEEK 6.3 - PROGRESS
Just as I thought, a shitty way to start the day. I think I am officially taking a “break” for the next couple of days. I’m beating myself up over measurements that are insignificant in the grand scheme of my weight loss journey. I don’t want to let a 0.6 lb weight gain this week ruin my entire day or make me feel horrible about myself. I’ve come a long way...

DAY 42.3
Some days I just feel as though I am setting myself up for failure. Take today for example… I worked my ass off by eating right all day, going out for a run, & doing some core strengthening exercises…only to sweep it all under the rug with a large chocolate bar and a big glass of milk while watching a movie before bed last night. WTF? Where has my will power gone? Not looking...

Running Jackets
deghanmay: Regarding jackets, I have a fleece lined pullover that I got on super sale at City Sports that is doing the trick instead of a pricey running jacket. I’ve been pairing that with a long sleeved compression shirt, another regular long or short sleeve shirt, gloves and a hat, and I’ve been doing fine outside. Thanks for the tip! I’m super picky when it comes to buying clothing,...

DAY 41.3
I am so ashamed at myself right now…I have no excuse for the way I ate today. I did get some cardio in, but I was supposed to lift some weights too. I feel like this is going to be the toughest week of this year for me. I will try to not stray too far from the path of healthy eating. Yet, not only do we have a major holiday on Friday, my 29th birthday is Wednesday (yay!) and there’s...

DAYS 38.3 - 40.3
This time of year is a tough one, and I’ve underestimated it once again. I feel like I am falling into a bad pattern of weekend weight gain. It’s been a couple of weeks now where I’ve had to lump 3-4 days into one post without accountability and I do not like that one bit. I can blame so many things this weekend, but seriously, what’s the point? I am responsible for what I...

Question for my NYC peeps
monkeychow: I’ll be in NYC from the 26th (my birthday!) until the 30th this month.  I’ll be staying with The Boy in our brand new LES apartment (the one I’m not so patiently waiting to move in to, once I get a job) and I’m so, so, so excited.  I’m looking for restaurant suggestions. What are some of your favorite, fun, yummy restaurants? P.S.  I’m not a huge sushi fan. Burgers: Corner Bistro...

DAY 36.3
So I made the classic beginner’s running mistake today with my tempo run by pushing myself so hard during my speed intervals that I had to slow down to a walk for recovery each time. Since I’m still a newbie at this running thing, there’s bound to be some trial and error while putting my plan into action. As long as I learn from my mistakes, then I am okay with committing them....

Updated Training Schedule →
I had to update my running program because I forgot that I am going to Las Vegas for a weekend in January and to a wedding in Mexico for a week in February. Obviously, both of these trips (and locations) are not well suited for my training, so adjustments needed to be made for those days that will be affected. However, I am quite looking forward to running on the beaches of Akumal, Mexico in...

WEEK 5.3 - PROGRESS
I guess I could consider the fact that I didn’t gain any fat weight this past week “progress”, but that just doesn’t seem right. On the other hand, I did add some lean body mass back onto my frame, and that is progress. I need to break out of this rut. I’ve been sitting around 195 now for the last 4 weeks. And if that wasn’t bad enough, my body fat has ceased...

DAY 35.3
It’s tough getting back up on that wagon when you fall off, but in the long run it’s totally worth the extra effort. I did a moderate run today at an 8:40/mi pace followed by a lower body split with some core work. Since my new training plan calls for weights at least 2x a week, a weight session had to be done today because I didn’t do one yesterday…and haven’t done...

DAYS 31.3 - 33.3
Sorry about the lack of updates over the weekend. Not only did I have friends visiting from out of town, I also had my first race on Saturday morning (which I’ll talk about later), and an amazing amount of chores/errands to accomplish in a small window of time on Sunday. I’m feeling really exhausted right now, even though I had about 10 hours of sleep last night…tis the season,...

DAY 30.3
I think that I am over whatever bug it was that I had yesterday. All I know is that I am feeling much better after braving the cold and going out for a run this morning! A few weeks ago I set my goal time for this upcoming 4 mile race in Prospect Park to be 0:36 min (that’s an avg 9min/mile). So I decided to give it a shot today and see if I am prepared for Saturday morning. I chose to run...

WEEK 4.3 - PROGRESS
After a much needed day of sleeping, water, relaxation, and just generally being a sick bum, I’m feeling better. I’m happy to report that all traces of fever seem to be gone. I still feel a bit weak though, so I’m trying to take it easy. This is really hard because I need to get in at least one more run before my race on Saturday, and I want to do it today. But I’m just...

I’m paying for yesterday… I feel sick, have the chills, and a really bad stomach ache. I spent the night tossing and turning with a fever and cold sweats. And comfort foods like grilled cheese and soup. ...

DAY 28.3*
I didn’t plan on making today a high calorie day, it just sort of happened. I had to meet with my director to go over the most recent cut of our film, take notes, and make a plan of attack to fix it (this is also known as a screening). That took a much larger chunk out of my day than I had hoped. On my way home, I ran into a good friend of mine who just happened to be in the neighborhood. He...

Let the training begin
I’ve decided to start a training program for a half-marathon race. I signed up for the NYC Half-Marathon lottery last week and I want to make sure that I’m prepared, just in case. A training program will not only help keep me motivated, it will keep me goal oriented so I don’t fall into a rut and get sloppy with my runs. Taking the advice of a friend and fellow runner, I’m...

DAYS 25.3 - 26.3
I was a bad boy this weekend. No cardio exercise, no weight lifting, no runs…drank copious amounts of alcohol, ate delicious cake and ice cream, and spent Sunday watching football (and Freaks & Geeks) on the couch with my sick girlfriend. But I had a fantastic time regardless. And isn’t that what life is all about?

Two Bridges
I have a feeling that I’ll be incorporating some version of this route into my training a lot, so I’ve given it a name: Two Bridges. I ran over the Brooklyn Bridge into Manhattan, up Lafayette St. and through Chinatown to the Manhattan Bridge, where I proceeded to run back into Brooklyn and through the surrounding neighborhoods to bring my total distance to 6 miles. Below are my...
